Nana-Hinneh Asomah, Volta Regional Police Commander has said robbery was high on the rise in the Region despite a general fall in crime rates, comparing reported cases in the first quarters of 2016 and 2017.
He said robbery cases in the Region rose from three to eight but murder declined from 14 to ten and assured that the figures would improve within the year’s second quarter.
Addressing the 2016 West African Security Services Association (WASSA) celebration in Ho on Friday, Mr. Asomah said the Region recorded a total of 13,151 cases in 2016, with 3,450 in the first quarter alone.
He said rape and defilement were declining steadily with six and 20 cases recorded respectively in the first quarter of 2017 against 13 and 30 cases in the first quarter of last year.
Mr. Asomah said stealing dropped from 500 to 400 and charged his men to work harder to reduce narcotic possession cases. He asked the police to be well disciplined and to work towards achieving public respect and cooperation.
“The ability of the police to perform their duty is dependent upon their ability to secure and maintain public respect, and therefore you must endeavour to be courteous, respectful, and accommodating to members of the public”, Mr. Asomah stated.
Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister commended the police for the feat.
