Educationist calls for a "Better Education"

The Rev Samuel Afanie Amankwah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Education, has said there was a need for a "better education" for Ghanaians to ensure the rapid socio-economic development of the nation. He said the search for "better education" necessitated the institution of the many education reforms and policies in the country over the years. Rev Amankwah was speaking on the topic "Better Education in Ghana, a concern for Secretaryship and Management Studies" at an education forum organised by the Association of HND Secretaryship and Management Studies of Sunyani Polytechnic. He noted with regret that although education was meant to respond to the needs and aspirations as well as ensuring the total well-being of the citizenry, some Ghanaians fell short of attributes of education including honesty, hard work, trustworthiness and acquisition of relevant skills. This failure, he said, had given credence to the fact that education is not better in the country. Rev. Amankwah said the need for better education was of a major concern and a challenge for students pursuing secretaryship and management studies. He stressed the need for a change in such attitudes to make the call for better education more meaningful and relevant to contemporary economic revolution. "It is this canker and many others that have hindered the rapid socio-economic development of our dear nation." Rev. Amankwah outlined a number of measures that ought to be carried out for the realization of better education. These should include stakeholders of education and politicians, preventing government interference in existing education policies, education policies should be allowed to travel their full length to achieve desired results, discipline at all levels among students and school administrators, while parents and parent/teacher associations should ensure that the basic needs of their wards are provided.
