The timeless teaching of Proverbs 6:6 reminds us all to be mindful of the future in all that we do. It also reminds us that the glorious abundance of today may wither away leaving us in a state of need tomorrow hence the need to prepare for those unpredictable days ahead.
In Proverbs 6:6-11 the wise King Solomon teaches:
“Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise; which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer; and gathers her food in the harvest. How long will you slumber, O sluggard? When will you rise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep-- So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler, And your need like an armed man.”
This is a distinct precept; and it is for the most part as needless to seek, as hard to find, coherence in the proverbs. We are advised not only to go to the ant, but more importantly to learn of “her ways and be wise.” What are the ways of the Ant we are implored here to learn?
The ant is time and season conscious. The ant is mindful of her limitations and thus make effort to avoid situations that would make her miserable. So in good time when there are no limitations or hindrances, she gathers the best she can in store.
If the Ant orders her ways best simply because she respects times and seasons while appreciating the scarcity or limitations of its flow, what can we not do in Ghana with same attitude?
We must all make an effort at this most needed change in our individual and collective lives. Respect time, act right and timely. The only true change Ghana needs is the change in us towards time.
