AMA Boss: Stray Animals To Be Auctioned

The issue of stray animals in the capital have always been of national concern, as they pose a great danger to both pedestrians and motorists. It is a common sight to behold these stray animals, especially cows and goats, majestically strutting their stuff in the middle of the road and even highways. But there is hope in sight. The Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Vanderpuje has hinted that the assembly will begin to confiscate all stray animals found loitering in the capital. Speaking to Peace news, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) boss said, We have so many animals that are on the streets of Accra and there is a need for us to bring the situation under control, because it is a violation of AMA City Code and City Bye-laws Animals should be contained, they should not roam the streets of Accra and so weve made the necessary arrangements to bring all such animals under control, he told Peace news. According to him, if the owners of these stray animals fail to hold them in check, the AMA will enforce its bye laws by arresting the animals If we arrest them, they will be in our custody for about 3 days, if after 3 days, their owners do not come and pay the necessary fine the animals will be auctioned off...We have to find better ways of implementing and executing standards. We are taking all the experiences in the past into consideration and we are hoping that this time we will do the right thing to benefit our society The city of Accra is not for the rearing of animalsyou cannot rear pigs, cows, goat, sheep in the city of Accra, they are scattered all over the places, we will seize them, and the owners have 3 days otherwise we will auction them off he vowed. The AMA has for several years tried unsuccessfully to rid the city of these stray animals but to no avail. It is hoped that this latest measure, will be successful.
