A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 20-year-old ex-convict to 15 years imprisonment for attempted robbery during, which, one Mumuni Mohammed, alias "Yellow" a member of the criminal gang, died of gunshot wounds in a fire-fight with the police. Issah Abu alias "striking", a scrap dealer, denied the offence. His two other accomplices are on the run. Police Inspector Martin Asenso told the Court presided over by Mr. Justice Adjei Frimpong that the police patrol team received information on May 5, at about midnight, that four men armed with locally manufactured pistols were on board an Opel taxi cab and heading towards Asokore-Mampong for a robbery operation. They intercepted the cab at Sawaba where fierce gun battle ensued. One of the policemen, General Lance Corporal Samuel Effah suffered serious injuries from gunshot wounds and received treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Police Inspector Asenso said Abu and the two others managed to escape but he was picked on June 10, from his hideout, following a tip off. The police retrieved from him a locally manufactured pistol and he admitted the offence in his caution statement.
