PPP Stalwart Slams US Ambassador . . . Questions His Stake In ECG

Director of Operations of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu has asked the US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson to mind his own business and stop meddling in the affairs of the State.

Nana Ofori Owusu lambasted the US Ambassador for poking his nose into matters regarding the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Commenting on the US Embassy's claim that the ECG is inefficient in the processing and collection of bills, Nana Ofori Owusu, who was contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, stated categorically that the Embassy has deliberately chosen to paint the ECG black in an attempt to hasten the process for the concessionary sale of part of the company.

The US ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson last week said that the failure of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to furnish the Embassy with a bill for the past two years in spite of its willingness to pay, demonstrates the inefficiencies in the operations of the company.

It is believed that these claims may be linked to the controversies surrounding the Millennium Power Compact II agreement government signed with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), an independent United States government agency that has as part of the terms, government giving the ECG on concession to a private company.

Nana Ofori Owusu cited that reasons for the claims by the US Ambassador are because the embassy has peculiar interest in the sale of the ECG.

He further asked the US Ambassador to remit the embassy's debt to ECG since they owe the company.

You want us to sell ECG so fast that you, as an ambassador sitting in Ghana, you’re now part of our domestic affairs; our domestic activities and making pronouncements on institutions of State? They even owe them…They say there hasn’t been invoice. Evidence has come to the contrary. They paid as of March; their own worker at the US Embassy has come out to say this. So, why is it that we’re in this country and looking on for ECG to be painted black so that it can be hung?" he questioned.

Nana Ofori Owusu further wondered why the US Ambassador is silent on other national issues but particularly keen on the ECG.

He noted that "if it's because of challenges with public institutions, then we should outsource the Presidency. We should gift it to the Americans to come and run our Presidency because there are problems there. They should outsource the Ministry of Roads and Transport because there are problems there. They should outsource DVLA because there are problems there. They should outsource Passport office because there are problems there”.

The PPP Director of Operations didn't leave out the Nana Addo administration as he expressed uttermost disappointment in the government for failing to make a firm stance on the ECG issue.

According to him, if the government dares sign up for the sale of ECG; there will be a nationwide protest to revoke the decision.

I am surprised at the 180-degree turn of the NPP administration towards Millennium challenge compact II. I am surprised. I am flabbergasted. I am in a state of awe, a state of perplexity. I don’t understand that when they mentioned that we will not sell ECG. We’ll renegotiate the compact, we have not”, he stressed.
