The Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region recorded 841 criminal cases last year as against 2,519 the previous year.
According to the police, the figure which represented a 66.6 per cent reduction in crime in the area, was a result of effective day and night patrols, among others.
The Nsawam District Police Commander, Superintendent Felix Apedo said these during the annual celebration of West African Security Services Association (WASSA) by the District Command at Nsawam last Friday.
The social occasion, which attracted other sister security agencies, was used to take stock of their activities. It was also used by the police personnel to socialise.
The District Police Commander said a total of 143 road accidents were recorded in 2016 as compared to 225 in 2015.
He commended the personnel for their dedication to work, even at the peril of their lives, and advised them to work within the confines of the law.
Supt Apedo called on the police personnel to be professional in the discharge of their duties to maintain the trust the public had reposed in them, saying that, the Command would not countenance any attitude that would bring the image of the police into disrepute.
He urged the public to provide reliable information on criminal activites to the police for prompt action, assuring that the Command would ensure that lives and properties were protected at all times.
Supt Apedo also assured informants that their confidentiality would be protected at all times.
He called on the municpal assembly and other organisations to assist the Command to put up structures on its acquired land near the Nsawam Cannery to serve as offices and residence for the personnel.
The Nsawam Municpal Chief Executive, Isaac Kwadjo Buabeng in his address called on the youth in the municipality to abide by the laws of the country.
“The peace and security of the country are vital component for the development and prosperity of any community and for no reason should any person or group of persons take the law into their own hands simply because they are aggrieved,” he said.
While assuring the Command of the assembly’s continuous support to achieve their set goals, Mr Buabeng commended the personnel for their dedication to duty, even at the peril of their lives, and urged them to be unrelenting.
