Deputy Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress has vehemently condemned the lynching of a Military officer, Capt. MA Mahama of 5 Battalion of Infantry by locals of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region.

Commenting on the issue on Peace FM's flagship programme 'Kokrokoo', Fred Agbenyo charged the BNI and all security agencies to up their game against violence in the country.

He noted that the citizenry have had a leeway to commit violence because the security agencies have become inactive in picking intelligence and acting proactively to avert any violent situations.

“If the Police cannot protect themselves, national security can’t protect themselves and the court can’t protect their own; those of us left are in trouble,” he stated.

Fred Agbenyo however believed the lynching of the Military Officer has a connection with illegal mining (galamsey), saying the mob may have lynched him because they felt he was disturbing their job.

He wondered how the deceased could be mistaken for an armed robber when he was jogging at 8:30 Monday morning.

“Is it not the case that the people knew that this man – the soldier – was indeed a soldier but because he was ruining their job; they had such courage to pounce on him. Should we accept that it was just a mistake and that they thought he was an armed robber . . . What armed robber will be bold to wake up at 8 O’clock and be jogging along the road?" he questioned.

To him, he thinks "the mob knew very well that he’s a soldier but because he’s disturbing their job, they want to put fear rather in the military", contrary to reports that the mob took instant justice on the Officer on assumption of him being an armed robber.

Fred Agbenyo called for investigations into the case and also advised the security agencies as well as politicians to detach politics from cases of violence.

He called on them to ensure the country's laws are put into work.
