Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have vowed to stay away from Somanya in the Eastern Region until the Chiefs of the area render an unqualified apology and asuure them of their safety.

According to them, they are not ready to compromise on their security and will only return to Somanya to render services, when there’s a life threatening situation such as the collapse of an electricity pole carrying life line in order to protect lives.

The workers are currently at Juapong and the Regional Office at Tema.

Their decision follows the Public Utilities Workers Union(PUWU) advising them to withdraw their services vis a vis the imminent danger they face in the enclave.

PUWU says such decision is necessary due to the apparent threats of possible attacks by the locals of the Eastern regional town.

Hundreds of locals took over the offices of the ECG at Somanya two weeks ago and vandalized properties belonging to the company to protest against what they described as outrageous ECG bills.

The Deputy General Secretary of PUWU Mr Nyaba in an interview noted that on the 26th of May the people of Somanya presented a petition to the ECG management in which they demanded that all ECG staff in the area should be transferred hence “the workers cannot be there to risk their lives.”

“The chiefs who signed the letter together with some youth leaders should be able to give us assurance that the ECG workers when they return to their office in Somanya will be safe, when that is done the workers will come back. 

Meanwhile, the Nene Akuetey II, Vice Chairman of Krobo United Voice Association, has called the bluff of the ECG workers, insisting that no apology will ever be rendered.
