Court fines careless driver

A circuit court at Mpraeso, on Thursday imposed GHC 1,000 fine on Maxwell Totimeh, a 32-year-old driver, for careless driving and negligently causing harm. The court presided over by Mr Alex Owusu Ofori, ordered that GHC 800 of the fine should be given to Mr Oheneba Kissi, News Editor of Obuoba FM station, whose right leg was amputated as a result of the accident. Mr Patrick Owusu, elder brother of Mr Kissi, who were involved in the accident that occurred at Adensua near Nkawkaw on the Accra-Kumasi road last year, died at the hospital. Detective Police Inspector Christian Apronti of the Nkawkaw Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), told the court that on October 26, last year, Totimeh was driving a DAF truck, loaded with building materials from Kumasi to Tema. Prosecution said that on reaching Adensua near Nkawkaw, Totimeh attempted to overtake an articulator truck and collided with a Nissan Urvan bus being driven by Mr Kissi from the opposite direction of the road. Insp Apronti said Mr Kissi and his brother, who were seriously injured, were rushed to the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw. Prosecution said Mr Kissi was referred to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and Owusu refereed to Koforidua Regional Hospital. He said Owusu died while on admission at the hospital and Kissi's right leg was amputated.
