The Winneba Municipal Police has arrested and placed in custody a former student of the Winneba Community Health Nurses Training School for allegedly raping a colleague female student at a knife point. The Winneba Municipal Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Martin Asamoah, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba, said the names of the students were being withheld for security reasons. ASP Asamoah said the two Former Students completed school a few years ago but have been referred to re-take some papers they failed. He said sometime this month, the students together with others, came to re-sit their various papers on November 16 2009. The Police Commander said both the female student and the male student were staying at different houses very far from each other. ASP Asamoah said on Monday November 16 2009, the female student reported to the Police that while standing outside the yard of her house in the evening of Friday November 13, the male student took advantage to the darkness of the place, pulled a knife on her and raped her. The Police Commander said upon the report, the Police went to the school to see the authorities on how best the male student could be seen. He said as soon as the school authorities heard the report from the Police, they handed over the student to the Police, without allowing him to take the examination with the explanation that "they would not tolerate a rapist at the school". ASP Asamoah said the Police have not establish any evidence of rape during their investigations and a medical reports on the girl also indicate that the "private part of the woman was normal". The Police Commander said friends of the male students, who had been in Police custody since Monday, told the Police during their investigations that at the time that the girl claimed the man was raping her, their friend was asleep. They said their friend has been arrested on trumped-up charge and appealed to the authorities to investigate the matter properly. ASP Asamoah said efforts were being made to send the suspect to the Circuit Court at Agona Swedru immediately for the court to go through the matter. Meanwhile a large number of student sympathisers, from school have since Monday besieged the Police station to sympathize with the male student, whom they insist was innocent.
