Human Rights Activist On A Month Hunger Strike

A human Rights Activist based in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Mr. Kariama A. Ahmed, has decided to go on hunger strike for a month. his action is to call on the people of Bawku Municipality, the security agencies and President John Evans Atta Mills to take a decisive action to end the conflict in Bawku which he described as needless. The 28-year-old social worker, who was speaking to journalists on his decision to embark on the hunger strike, said human rights abuse meted out to the people in Bawku should be stopped immediately because it makes those that are abused lose their dignity in society. He referred to a case where some two people who were arrested by the security outfit early this month and were stripped naked as dehumanizing and uncalled for and has made those affected lose their dignity, not only in society but also it would have a long lasting trauma in their lives. Mr. Ahmed, therefore, called on all the feuding factions to smoke the peace pipe and put the future of their children and the love for mother Ghana first and that efforts should also be focused on trust building. He added that, efforts should also be made to put an end to the arbitrary arrest, detention and torture of innocent people under the guise of intelligence led operations. The Human Rights Activist further urged the security forces to make it a point to cover all flanks and not a particular side. Mr. Ahmed said efforts should be made to stop the ambushing and killing of people which is usually hastily concluded by politicians as armed robbery. This, according to him, normally results in the lack of trust which leads to retaliatory attacks. He further called for adequate protection and medical attention for all suspects in prison, police and military custodies. This, he said, should be the collective efforts of the nation, the international community and the people of Bawku, so that peace can return to the area for meaningful development to take place. Mr. Ahmed said if nothing is done to this course he would continue the strike for another month.
