Editorial: Erratic Power Outage Is Embarrassing

Heads Must Roll! light goes off and comes on almost five times in every thirty minutes these days and the situation is becoming shameful and it is adding more hardship to the suffering Ghanaians. It will not be far from the truth to say that Ghana has been turned into a disco tic country. This has sent shame and fear down the spine of many supporters of the ruling NDC and on daily bases these supporters are disillusioned. They have begun shying away from debates, discussions and even arguments with other opponents over party matters. But nobody from the Electricity Company of Ghana or better still the Ministry of Energy has been responsible enough to explain to Ghanaians the cause of the erratic power supply in the country. Is it the free country we are made to believe in? On March 6, 1957, the day of independent, our first President Osagyfo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared that Ghana, our beloved country is free forever. This famous declaration at the polo ground meant that Ghana is free from oppressions and suppressions, certainly, this includes unnecessary power outages that will damage home appliances, lead to jobs cuts, low productivities, which will then lead to reductions in incomes of the people, destructions of commercial and industrial activities. 52 years after this declaration, our leaders are leading us through the wrong path and this famous declaration perhaps has almost turned into a curse instead of blessing. Ghanas energy problem has deteriorated from bad to worse under every, administration although President John Jerry Rawlings did his best to ameliorate the situation. Government after another had tried hard to find solutions to this life threatening problems, yet all their efforts hit the hard rock. it appears if the leaders of this country except Dr. Nkrumah had lack the clue as to how to find a lasting solution to the countrys energy supply. In the days of NPPs administration, NDC leaders made a big political capital about the energy crisis in the country in retaliation. The NDC may be right by all standards in speaking out against the energy crisis because Ghanaians have given the mandate to the NPP to make their condition of living better. But after 8 years Ghanaians felt that their living conditions have gone from bad to worse, therefore NPP could not longer govern them. Against this background, Ghanaians decided to return NDC power against some assumptions that NDC will never taste power again because of their long stay in office. But it appears after 8 years leaders of the NDC had not learnt anything. For almost 11 months in office, power stability and water supply have been problematic and it is almost becoming embarrassing to the foot soldiers that toiled to bring back party to power. the Chief Executive Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (EGC), Mr. Cephas Gakpo must be a brave man to still hang on to his post in the midst of all these disgraceful acts. Mr. Gakpo has shown that he lacks the competence to manage the ECG to regain its glorious days so it is important that he steps down before Ghanaians move drove to start calling his head. Under this current CEO, light goes and comes back if as we are in disco. We at the Crystal Clear Lens will like to send a word of caution to Mr. Gakpo that the instability of energy supply is causing havoc and threat to the life and property and we soon launch a crusade to remove him from his post if the situation still persists till end of this month. Ghanaians voted for a change and that change must be seen permeating every aspect of the institutions so that the better Ghana agenda can be realised with ease.
