A total of 13 people have been killed in violent clashes, in the past two weeks, between Fulani herdsmen and Konkonba settler farmers in the Kintampo North municipality of Brong-Ahafo Region.

The deaths occurred during attacks and reprisal attacks over the alleged destruction of farms by cattle, belonging to the herdsmen.
The troubled communities are Jatokura, Kawunpe, Yawbofourkura, Dawadawa, and Kadriso.

Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kwaku Techie–Poku, who confirmed the deaths to the Ghanaian Times yesterday, indicated that the victims include nine herdsmen and four Konkonbas.

He said there was tension in the communities as a result of the clashes, but gave the assurance that police have been deplored to the areas to ensure peace.

According to DCOP Techie–Poku , while the settlers accused the herdsmen of allowing their cattle to graze on their farms, thereby destroying their crops, the herdsmen claimed the settlers have been stealing and shooting their cattle.

He said the Konkonbas initially attacked the Fulani herdsmen, killing nine of them, adding that reprisal attacks led to the death of four Konkonbas.

DCOP Techie–Poku explained that among the deceased, one farmer was shot on his farm, while four Konkonbas where shot while riding motorcycles at Yawbofourkura, and others were found dead in the bush.

He added that one person who survived the shooting incident, was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Kintampo Government Hospital morgue.

The Regional Police Commander stated that the incidents happened on plantations, which made it difficult for the police to avert the fatal clashes.

He indicated that a joint police/military taskforce has gone to the area to maintain law and order.
