Police women attend workshop in Sunyani

A two-day leadership training workshop aimed at encouraging female police personnel to play active role in all duties in the service opened on Thursday in Sunyani. Fifty-five police women drawn from 17 districts of the Brong-Ahafo Region are attending the workshop. Opening the workshop Deputy Commissioner of Police Seth Charles Oteng, Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, stressed the need for refresher courses, workshops, meetings and other programmes to update the knowledge and skills of the female police personnel to add value to services they rendered. "Today times have changed as policewomen and their male counterparts perform the same duties. When our women partake in United Nations Peace Keeping missions there is no difference between what the policeman does and what the police woman does. They perform patrol duties, keep records, submit reports and drive United Nations marked vehicles on their own," he said. The Regional Commander urged the police women to make good use of the opportunity and to share the knowledge they would acquire with their colleagues. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mrs. Faustina Asare, the President of the Police Ladies Association in Brong-Ahafo Region, said policewomen gave numerous excuses when assigned to challenging duties. She said this had resulted in their marginalization in decision making and appointments for leadership roles. Mrs Asare said the workshop was crucial as it was meant to help shape the performance of policewomen to become models to their peers and to the benefit of the general public. She expressed appreciation to the Police Administration and Action Aid, an NGO, for their support towards the organization of the workshop.
