Pensioners call for increase in pensions

The Hohoe Local branch of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Pensioners Association has appealed to the government to consider topping up pensions in relation to increases in salaries to reflect the reality in the marketplace. Mr Herman Broni, Chairman of the Hohoe Local Branch of the Association, who spoke at its fourth Quarter General Meeting at Hohoe, said SSNIT yearly increments were insignificant in the face of the scantiness of its pension. He said SSNIT increment of 17 percent on pensions could be reviewed upwards and borne by government, in view of their selfless and unalloyed contributions towards nation building. Mr Broni said some pensioners still received a meagre pension of GHc 40 a month saying "this is the disease that is expressly sending most of us to the grave". Mr Broni appealed to pensioners who are undecided about joining the association to do so now because it has a voice, mission and vision.
