Editorial: Where Are We Drifting?

-Violence here, violence there Ghana has often been referred to as an oasis of peace in a troubled sub-region. This feat is greatly associated to the Ghanaian for his own peaceful nature, which is characterized it the fama Nyame Syndrome. And since peace is regarded as very integral for development, Ghanaians do not only cherish the peace, but also pray for its sustenance. Though there are a lot of tribes in the country, the Ghanaian has not ruled out the tribal marriage, thus enabling them to live together as one people. Of late, however, violence seems to be rearing its head in the Ghanaian society, with its resultant worry to the peace loving Ghanaian. To mention a few of these recent violence, the Bawku crisis, the Agbogbloshie clashes, the Avenor violence and the Nkrumah flats attack come handy. Our searchlight will however be on the Nkrumah flat issue, since we have been following it for some time now. What is more, the issue of ejection should not attain such proportions as to the extent that a dubious group-whether land guards or National Security, should arrogate to itself powers that should hold everybody to ransom, including the Police, the main law and order enforcement agency in the country. The police appeared helpless in that issue because that dubious group at the center stage of the issue claims that it is acting on orders from above. Above where, heaven? It is a common knowledge that the law is no respecter of persons. Therefore, for dubious groups like the Nkrumah flats invaders to hide under whatever powers, either above or political to take it upon itself to visit carnage against innocent and defenseless civil servants is rather unfortunate and untenable. More so, when the former group is armed to the teeth, with the latter being a defenseless one, with the police looking on helplessly to say the least is bizarre in present day Ghana. What is more, taking into consideration that these violence have been in quick succession, makes the matter more complex and incomprehensible. At least, every Ghanaian equally needs protection under any regime, however his political or religious affiliation. We therefore appeal to the ruling Atta Mills led government not only to ensure equal protection for all Ghanaians, but also to call to order its operatives which are hiding behind political power to terrorize others, as no condition is permanent.
