Gov't issues White Paper on Single Spine Pay Policy

Government has issued a White Paper on the Single Spine Pay Policy following the approval by President John Evans Atta Mills. It confirms government's promise to commence the implementation of the policy from January 2010. A statement issued in Accra on Thursday by Mrs. Zita S. Okaikoi, Minister of Information explained that the White Paper has detailed government's plans for the implementation of the new pay policy for the Public Service, which aims at addressing disparities, distortions and restoring equity in the pay structure. "The implementation would however, be in phases over a five-year period starting from January 2010 and because we also note that there are some outstanding issues, the White Paper gives a six-month period during which challenges would be tackled," the Minister said. Mrs. Okaikoi noted that the issuance of the White Paper and scheduled commencement of the policy in January next year further demonstrated government's commitment to the welfare of the worker and "an affirmation of the communiqu adopted at the May Consultative Workshop at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration." Government said it was looking forward to equity and fairness in the country's pay arrangement as it works with all the social partners in the implementation process.
