Nigerian Dies In Galamsey Pit

A 25-year-old Nigerian, identified as Christian, was found dead in a deep pit for illegal small scale miners (galamseyers) at Ntotroso in the Asutifi North District of the Brong Ahafo Region.

Briefing the media, the Asutifi District Police (DSP) Teddy Brown, together with the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Anthony Mesnah, who is also the head of the District Security Committee (DISEC), BNI officer, said he received a message at about 3am Monday that a galamsey pit had collapsed on two people.

He added that upon the team’s arrival at the location, they saw a dead body by the pit, believed to have been pulled out by the galamseyers.

“The other miners took to their heels upon a tip off, DSP Brown said.
According to DSP Brown, the site was completely closed down by the police, in coloration with the paramount Chief of Ntotroso, barima Twereko Ampem, but was reopened.

“We made some arrests last month, processed the culprits too court but they are still back to the business, which is now beyond our control,” he explained.

The DCE, Anthony Mensah,s aid the District had-sent some police personnel from the District to be trained by the Operation Vanguard to help combat illicit mining in the Asutifi North District.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased had been conveyed to the Saint Elizabeth Hospital at Hwediem.
