Miner in court for stealing pumping machine

Kwesi Emmanuel, a 30-year-old small-scale miner, on Tuesday appeared before the Kade District Magistrate Court for stealing a pumping machine and its accessories. Emmanuel pleaded guilty with explanation, but the Magistrate, Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, entered a plea of not guilty for him. He was however ordered to pay GHc30 to the complainant, Ms Afua Agyeiwaa, for the transportation of the machine and accessories to and from the court and additional GHc 80 for keeping the machine for four days. Emmanuel was then granted a GHc600 bail with one surety to re-appear on December 8. Police Inspector D.A. Atigsika, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant and the accused reside at Akyem Apinamang where Ms Agyeiwaa hire pumping machines, which she kept with the witness in the case. He said a few weeks ago, Emmanuel went to the house of the witness and without informing her, took one pumping machine away. The complainant confronted Emmanuel who confessed that the machine was with him. Agyeiwaa reported the matter to the police who arrested Emmanuel.
