Who Will Save Accra-Tema Motorway?

It appears there is nobody to stop the massive sale of lands adjoining the Accra-Tema Motorway. Ever since media reports exposed activities of estate developers which threaten the future development of the motorway, not even a single government entity has take up the issue. The motorway was built by the government of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1964 to link two major cities � Accra, the national capital, and Tema, the emerging industrial and port city. Today, the lands adjoining the motorway have been sold to estate building shops and houses very close to it. This move will definitely affect future plans to expand the motorway to more than tow carriage lanes. At the time, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the visionary, foresaw heavy vehicular traffic building between the two cities, reaching its peak when his dream of transforming Tema into the industrial hub of the newly independent Ghana began to materialize. According to media reports, the sale of the lands is a joint effort between families claiming to be owners and officials of the Ministry of lands and its allied institutions. The sale is said to be in flagrant disregard of regulations governing lands acquired for public use. Some of the estate developers and individuals dwelling on the motorway have even connected water illegally. Their activities have led to destruction of water hoses supposed to transport water pumped from Kpone to Accra. Who will save the Accra-Tema motorway?
