Twenty-Five (25) farmers and a basic school in the Afigya-Kwabre District were honoured on Friday at this years national farmers' day celebration held at Tetrem. Nana Yaw Agyeman, 70, of Boamang was adjudged the overall Best District Farmer and took home, a 21-inch television set, bicycle, half piece of wax print, two pairs of Wellington boots, four key bar soap and four cutlasses. Madam Janet Pomaa of Abroma emerged the Best Cocoa Farmer and received a full piece of wax print, a spraying machine, agro-chemicals, cutlasses and soap as her prize. The woman farmer of the area, Madam Philomena Akyaa, was also presented with half piece of cloth, spraying machine, a radio set, pair of Wellington boots, key bar soap and cutlasses. The rest of the farmers carried home wax prints, spraying machines, Wellington boots, soap, cutlasses and certificates. Mr Oppong Kyekyeku Kaakyire, District chief Executive expressed worry about the rate of environmental degradation in the area through indiscriminate logging and said this was affecting farming. Ms Felicia Akowuah, District Director of Agriculture, praised farmers for their significant contribution to the national economy. She warned people to desist from setting bush fires. Nana Osei Kwame II, Chief of Tetrem called for the rehabilitation of roads in the district and the extension of credit facilities to farmers to expand their farms.
