Speaker of Parliament, Prof Mike Oquaye said he does not see Ghana legalising homosexuality since majority of Ghanaians are against the practice and parliament will yield to what Ghanaians want.

His comment comes on the back of President Akufo-Addo's comments that legalising homosexuality is bound to happen in the country if a strong case is made for it.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s remarks which have been greeted with mixed reactions by the populace, sought to suggest that even though legalising homosexuality is not a matter on the agenda, it’s bound to happen, if a strong coalition emerges.

Reacting to the development in an interview with journalists, Prof Oquaye said: “He [Akufo-Addo] said he will yield to what the people of Ghana want and of course parliament will also yield to what the people of Ghana want. I say Ghanaians; we have our culture so we will not want that. There are Christians who will not want that, we are Muslims and we will not want that so where will it pass to come, that is my conclusion as a social scientist. It is against Christian ideas, it’s against Muslim principles and it is also against our moral upbringing, so I don’t see how that is going to happen so don’t tell me about ifs because I don’t see it…”

Meanwhile, Information Minister Mustapha Hamid has said the government of Ghana does not intend to legalise homosexuality.

Mr Hamid in an interview with Joy FM on Monday, November 27, explained that the comment by Mr Akufo-Addo is not an endorsement of homosexuality or plans for its legalisation.

“Government’s position on homosexuality is that it is unacceptable now in Ghana and since law is premised on custom, what it also means is that we cannot make it legal,” Mr Hamid stated.
