Fire Guts Christ The King Cathedral In Sunyani

Fire on Sunday burnt down parts of the Christ the King Catholic Church Cathedral in Sunyani destroying a wardrobe containing choir robes and other items in the room.

Divisional Officer (DO) II Jonathan Ashong, the Sunyani Municipal Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday in Sunyani stated that his outfit at about 21:45 hours received an emergency call at the control room from Francis Emmanuel that there was a fire incident at the Cathedral.

He said personnel on duty quickly mobilised themselves and rushed to the scene, where they saw parts of the building in flames.

DO II Ashong said beside the choir robes and chairs, other few items yet to be identified were also destroyed, adding that the personnel were able to  bring the fire under control in less than 30 minutes.

He said although investigations were still pending, they suspected charcoal ember used in burning incense during the church service in the day that was not properly put off.

DO II Ashong cautioned the public against leaving naked fires after use as that was dangerous during the dry season and urged parents to monitor the movements of their children, within and outside the home, especially in the Christmas season whereby children watch Christmas movies on televisions for hours and forget to switch them off when going to sleep.

DO II Ashong entreated the general public not to put on their gas burners for cooking while watching televisions because the food could burn and lead to domestic fire outbreak.

He advised charcoal and fire wood users to ensure that the flames or embers were properly put off with plenty water before they leave the scene.
