Accra Police Deploys For X’mas

The Accra Regional Police Command has deployed three thousand police officers to secure key identifiable threat areas in Accra ahead of the Christmas festivities.

This deployment, according to DCOP George Alex Mensah, the Accra Regional Police Commander, is to deter criminal activities, frustrate their operations and swiftly arrest the few criminal elements who intend to take advantage of the festive season to commit crimes.

He said Police services will be visible in communities and residential areas, entertainment centers, shopping centers, markets areas, religious and special events among others.

“A review of crime trends this year shows rampant use of both registered and unregistered motorbikes to commit crimes. “

These criminals, he noted, through their operations have attacked persons and shops, phone card vendors, utility sales points and similar business outlets.

“In view of these happenings, the region is deploying 50 more motorbike patrol teams to augment the efforts of those already in the system.

“This will step up efforts to counter criminals who dare commit crimes using motorbikes and also complement the challenges posed by vehicle patrols in most poor motorable areas within the region.”

Community and Residential Policing

The Accra Regional Police Commander said the police will not stop policing communities and residential areas.

“What the Police would do during this festive season is to increase Police presence and assure the public of our readiness to protect them even at our peril.”

He urged the public to also observe basic personal security precautions to augment what the Police are already doing on the grounds.

DCOP Mensah also hinted that the police intend setting up temporary police posts in special and religious events across the region to provide the necessary security for worshippers and also prevent possible crimes from occurring.

“Police personnel will also be beefed up at our various entertainment centres and along the beaches to ensure the safety of any person who goes there.”

Traffic Management Duties

DCOP Mensah said the region is deploying a number of MTTD personnel at vantage traffic prone points to manage traffic effectively.

“Apart from the Police managing the traffic situation within the metropolis to ensure free flow of both vehicular and human traffic, the Police will also caution motorists against practices that endanger their lives and the lives of others on the road.”
