699 Illegal Miners Arrested

The activities of anti-galamsey taskforce operations have so far arrested over 699 illegal miners in three regions of Ghana.

The regions includes Eastern Region, Ashanti Region and Western Region.

Over 3000 machines used on water bodies for galamsey activities, have also been impounded by the Operation Vanguard.

Leader of the anti-galamsey taskforce, Colonel William Agyapong, who disclosed this to the media in Kumasi, indicated that, “the arrested persons have been processed and are at various stages of being taken to court with only 64 persons prosecuted so far.”

He said, “We have been able to effect as many as 699 arrests in Eastern Region, Ashanti Region and Western Region,”

According to him, “the operation is going well” adding that, “the wheel of justice grinds so slowly, so, it is taking time to get things to the end”.

Meanwhile the leader also lauded some of the small-scale miners who he said voluntarily moved “not less than 900 excavators from the various mining sites to the urban areas”.

Col. Agyapong has also, rubbished claims that, the Vanguards were taking bribes from some local and foreign nationals involved in illegal small-scale mining activities.
