Herdsman jailed 480 months for robbery

Amadu Sambo, a Fulani and member of a robbery gang, who blocked the Obuasi-Dunkwa Highway and robbed travellers of their money and other valuables, has been jailed 480 months by a Kumasi Circuit Court. He denied the offence while his accomplices are on the run. Police Chief Inspector Collins K. Fosu told the Court presided over by Mr Justice Amo-Yartey that Sambo and his colleagues mounted the operation on July 24, 2008 at about 0100 hours. They used a piece of wood to block the highway at the Fenaso Junction, seized money, mobile phones and other items from travellers. Zenabu Suleni, who was on board a Mercedes Benz, 207 model passenger bus with registration number, AS 6971 N, was hit on the back by a bullet fired from the shot of Sambo and his group at the vehicle. One of the victims, a taxi driver, managed to escape to inform policemen on duty at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Obuasi. They quickly responded but when they got to the scene, the robbers believed to be all Fulani, had fled. Police Chief Inspector Fosu said Sambo was arrested two months after the incident at Kyekyewere near Obuasi following a tip off. The convict was later identified by the driver of the 207 Benz bus.
