Maximum Jail Term For Gang-Rapists Will Be 3 Years-Former State Attorney

The maximum jail sentence for four three juveniles standing trial for allegedly gang-raping a young lady at Bantama in Kumasi is three years, A former State Attorney Augustine Obuor has said.

“They can even be handed back to their parents”, the renowned legal practitioner revealed on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM

“This is because they are not grown adults to keep them long behind bars for long. ….And anyone calling for a longer jail year term could be disappointed”, he explained to host of the show.

There has been widespread public condemnation following a widely-circulated video in which seven boys were seen sexually abusing a young girl.

Bantamahene, Baffuor Owusu Amankwatia VI has therefore issued a stern warning calling for severe punishment for arrested teenagers to serve as a deterrent to others who may intend to perpetrate such crime in the near future.

According to the traditional ruler, is sad for such a thing to happen and in a traditional area assuring not to intercede for suspects.

“There will be no attempt to intervene or intercede on behalf of the suspects”, he assured urging politicians and other traditional rulers to follow suit.

Calls have been made for the culprits to be severely punished to serve as a deterrent to others but he indicated that in view of their ages, they may not be given longer jail terms as the lay people want it.
