MTN caution subscribers about promotional scams

MTN Ghana on Wednesday said some scammers had taken advantage of its reward promotions to defraud its unsuspecting subscribers. "MTN wishes to bring to the attention of its valued subscribers, a promotional scam currently going on in the country targeted at MTN subscribers," a statement signed by Ms Mawuena Dumor, Corporate Services Executive of MTN Ghana said. It said the scam involved the use of text messages, which gave an indication that a subscriber has won a prize or prizes in a promotion. "The false text message also requests that subscribers redeem their prizes by purchasing a specified amount of recharge units and texting them to another MTN number or by making cash payments to a specified account," it said. It said subscribers could confirm all genuine MTN promotions from the official MTN website www.mtn.com.gh or call the Customer Care hotline, 111, to authenticate all promotions and procedures for redemption of prizes. The statement said "MTN does not charge any money or request for any quantity of recharge credits be sent to the company in order to redeem prizes." It said MTN always published the names of winners of all MTN Promotions and also directly called all winners of its promotions by using the official MTN line 0244300000 "Prizes must be redeemed by winners themselves and not by a third party and redemption centres where prize are collected will be set up whenever required at our Customer Service Centres or accredited dealers premises," it said. The statement, therefore, cautioned MTN subscribers to beware.
