Government urged to support commercials drivers

Mr Alando .A. Sidik, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has appealed to government to assist local commercial drivers to acquire good vehicles to reduce the rate of road accidents. He said due to the low income earned by drivers, loan acquisition from the financial institutions usually came with exorbitant interest payments, which made it very difficult for most of them to maintain or change their vehicles. Speaking with the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, Mr Sidik said a recent study conducted by the GPRTU showed that one of the main causes of driver fatigue was overworking in order to generate enough revenue to repay loans and interests. He said "the pressure puts on drivers to strain their nerves to make more money for the banks so that banks' officials would come and seize their vehicles, is a sufficient reason."
