Edem Agbewornu, the Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has called on government to stop expanding Gakli Kologa and other communities along the Ghana-Togo border at Aflao in the Volta Region for security reasons.
He said the “unauthorised” communities had become a haven for thousands of illegal migrants from neighbouring countries.
The DCE said this when he briefed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu on security in the area during his tour of the frontier.
Mr Agbewornu said the development poses serious challenges, adding that expanding “black market” and illegal activity make the situation a “time bomb.”
He said a huge market complex and other buildings had been constructed without permit and were dangerously sited along the buffer zone, causing difficulties in implementing regulatory policies.
Mr Agbewornu therefore called for a police post along the border and other vantage points to beef up security.
The MCE said the Republic of Togo has secured its side of the border and appealed to government to rebuild the broken border walls and enforce laws that prohibit the trade in foreign currency in the country.
The IGP commended the MCE for his efforts at ensuring security and said the Police Service would consider plans to establish a division at Aflao in view of recent industrial strife in the Municipality.
He appealed to the people to be law-abiding and cooperate with the security agencies.
