Editorial: Premature Declaration

President John Evans Atta Mills has for the second time indicated his intention to contest the 2012 general elections with only eleven months into his crumbling administration, if his first term in office elapses. He was speaking at Buipe during a sod cutting ceremony. He is reported to have attracted a loud applause from a section of party supporters and the entourage who accompanied him to the town. Even though we at the Patriot do not begrudge the President in seeking a second mandate from the good people of this country, we think such a declaration is premature and irrelevant, especially when his administration is barely one year. Also at a time when he has not fulfilled most of his campaign promises, we think declaring his intention to contest the 2012 general elections is inappropriate. One can infer from President Mills declaration that he has completely forgotten he would ought to seek approval from his party first. If not then he is convinced the NDC would show him the green light despite the several bashing from President Rawlings. Alban Bagbin, Spio Garbrah and the rest who have expressed grave dissatisfaction about his style of governance. For those who think the Presidents comment is timely since it is coming at a time when party members are criticizing him and his ministers, we think they ought to have a second look. This is because the criticism will continue as long as the President does what pleases his boss. We urge President Mills too concentrate on the four year mandate handed over to him by the good people of this country and deliver on his campaign promises. It is unfortunate that at a time when most Ghanaians are hungry and are anticipating that food be put on their table, the number one citizen of this country is thinking about how he can win power in 2012. We think it is only when John Evans Atta Mills has delivered on his promises that the good people of this country would renew his mandate for a second term. We dont want to believe President Mills has found something fascinating about the presidency hence his intention to seek for another term.
