2018 SoNA: Free SHS Has Come To Stay - Prez Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated his government commitment to sustain the free SHS policy.

Delivering the State of the Nation Address on the floor of Parliament Thursday morning, President Akufo-Addo stated emphatically that free SHS has come to stay.

According to him, the country needs skilled workforce to enhance national development, hence the need for every student to enjoy free SHS.

"Mr. Speaker, we need an educated and skilled workforce to be able to operate the modern economy…The free SHS is a start towards this goal. It is a policy that has come to stay. We’re reforming the school’s curricula to deal with the weaknesses of our education system and lay greater emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, reading History, and technical and vocational school.

“And a look at the national budget will tell you that we’re spending a lot of money in education and I’m certain that it is a worthwhile investment brilliantly supervised by that charismatic Minister for education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; Member of Parliament for Manhyia South”.

He believed Ghana's education system, with the introduction of the free SHS, will instill in the students “respect for the traditional values of discipline, fellow-feeling, hard work, honesty, integrity and patriotism”.
