Special Prosecutor nominee, Martin Amidu, has said that “the 2016 elections was won clean and clear” by the New Patriotic Party.
This was in response to a question posed to him by Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak, concerning an allegation the legislator said Mr Amidu had made through an article that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Osei, was appointed by former President John Mahama in order to rig the 2016 elections.
Mr Amidu who appeared before parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, 13 February 2018, said: “When I was writing about rigging, we were putting counter measures against it”.
He further explained that: “The problem we have in this country is that you don’t know how things were put in place by advocates of constitutional defense to make sure that nobody was able to [rig]. I was an activist, nobody was able to rig and misrepresent the numbers”.
NPP leader Nana Akufo-Addo polled 5,716,026 to beat Mr John Dramani Mahama who had 4,713, 277 in the polls.
According to EC statistics, Mr Akufo-Addo recorded 53.85% of the total votes cast as against 44.40 by Mr Mahama.
