Ablekuma Residents Battle AMA

The People of Ablekuma Nsumfa and NIC, suburbs of Accra, yesterday clashed with the Waste Management Department of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) over the Assemblys decision to turn certain parts of the area into dump sites. The residents protested vehemently against the Assemblys decision to include Ablekuma Nsumfa to the various dumping sites within the Accra metropolis. In the full glare of passers-by and commuters who were travelling along the Ablekuma main road, residents burnt tires and protested against the dumping of refuse at the area. Their intention was to block the vehicles from entering the place, a situation that made travelling along the Ablekuma main road very difficult on Sunday. The agitated residents fought the drivers and threatened violence if they, the drivers, defied their orders and dumped any refuse in the area. The drivers of the waste trucks had no alternative than to park their vehicles and report the incident to their superiors, to avoid a bloody clash. After hours of chanting war songs to exhibit their seriousness over the issue, the chiefs and certain elders of the area intervened and convinced the citizens to leave everything to them. The tension then reduced when the elders explained to residents the pledges that had been made by the Assembly to ensure that no stench comes from the refuse. A visit to the site by Daily Guide revealed a number of parked vehicles waiting to dump refuse at the proposed site. When the paper contacted some elders at the area, they expressed their happiness about the Assemblys efforts to fill the holes that had over the years become death traps. They were quick to add that they would ensure the Assemblys promise to make sure residents are provided with the necessary chemicals to spray the area is fulfilled. According to the elders, they also hope that the Assembly fulfills its promise to provide the people with a hospital else they would all join in the fight against the decision to turn the area into a dumping site.
