Assembly member cautions farmers

Mr Prince Diawuo, the assembly man for the Fawohoyeden electoral area in Asunafo North Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region has called for a ban on the use of chemicals by farmers to clear weeds before planting their crops. He explained in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that the practice would destroy young timber trees in off-reserves. He said the rate at which farmers applied the chemicals for cultivation was on the increase, which could cause damage to the young timber trees, and condemned media promotion of such chemicals without telling users of its dangers to the environment". The Assembly member said the young trees were destroyed in early stages and suggested that farmers rather weed their farm plots. Mr Diawuo called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) to collaborate with the Ministry of Lands and Forestry, Mines and Natural Resources to embark on an education drive to protect the young timber species.
