Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, Minister of Youth and Sports, has cut sod for the renovation and construction of new sporting facility work at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, valued at GHC18 million.

The move, is aimed at increasing sports facilities in the country.

The complex, which would have a new standardized football pitch, eight-lane running tracks, handball pitch, tennis court, basketball pitch, swimming pool, counselling center, ICT center, entrepreneurial center, boxing gym, car pack, a 500 sitting conference room, modern restaurant and a storey building, would also accommodate the various national teams, when completed.

According to Mr Asiamah, similar projects would be constructed in the rest of the regions, which forms part of President Akufo-Addo's commitment to developing sports infrastructure.

In an interview with GNA Sports Mr Asiamah noted that the project which would be completed in 16 months is part of the massive transformation of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex and a way of securing the future of our young ones through sports development.

“The sporting facility has been left unattended to for over 20 years and this government has seen the need to use sports as a tool for job creation and also to curtail social vices.

“The project when completed would be a multi-purpose youth center and would be named the Azumah Nelson Youth and Sports Center.

“So many people have benefited through sports and it is our aim to help transform the youth development through sports”.

Mr Azumah Nelson expressed his happiness over the project, after years dilapidation sports adding that such a massive facelift would befit Ghana, when completed.

“I am so happy, because it is going to help the youth to develop and refrain from bad habits”.

The former world featherweight champion and Super featherweight boxing champion used the occasion to urge Ghanaians to adopt a maintenance culture that would keep our facilities well.
