The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Liberian First Lady Clar Weah as their ambassador for women's football, making the announcement at the first symposium for African women's football in Morocco.

Speaking during the closing ceremony in Marrakech on Tuesday, CAF President Ahmad Ahmad announced that Weah, wife of Liberia president George Weah, will have the task of promoting women's football around the globe.

Weah, whose husband was the World Footballer of the Year in 1995, told KweséESPN: "This is unbelievable. I have attended this symposium for two days and now I am to champion the Women's Football cause out there.

"It is a task that I am ready to do because I know the importance of football right from what it did for my husband and now my family."

Agnes Mugena, a member of Uganda FA's executive committee representing women, told the assembled guests: "This has been an eye-opening symposium and it will get back to us who run football in our respective countries to become more proactive and push women's football to another level."

This was echoed by Meskerem Tadesse Goshime from Ethiopia, who said the symposium was a great chance for women's football to get the recognition it has been waiting for: "Everybody involved in women's football in Africa has been waiting for such a gathering.

"We want to raise our game but we cannot do it alone. It is my hope that women's football will from now get the needed support to take a step ahead."

Ahmad said he would ensure that the meeting's talking points did not go to waste: "The various recommendations will be forwarded to the newly established CAF Women's Football Department for review, and then to the CAF Executive Committee for implementation."
