AMA Charged With Bribery

Residents of Anyaa-Nsufa, a suburb of Accra, have called on government to investigate thoroughly the work of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), since they suspect some amount of corruption going on there. According to the residents, they woke up and realised that their environment has been used as a new refuse dump without any prior notice to them. In an interview with one of the drivers driving the waste vehicles of ABC Waste Management, he stated that some waste management authorities and some members of the AMA confronted the chiefs of Ablekuma about the problems some waste management companies were facing in handling of waste in the country, especially in Accra. The chiefs, he said later agreed that, they should fill the rubbish on lands that the stone crackers have made large holes on, which would later be covered with gravels to make the land leveled to avoid any danger. Answering questions during a dump demonstration to stop the waste cars, Abena Boahemaa, a resident, said that she was informed by a reliable source that the AMA had paid the chiefs of Ablekuma an amount of 3 billion cedis, given out three cars and some other items in order to dump refuse on the land that has already been bought and paid for. She further stated that the community is facing a lot of problems, some of which she mentioned as lack of quality roads, water and many others but nothing has been done about it though they have reported to both their MP and Assembly man. She noted that the dumping of refuse is going to cause a lot of harm to residents, especially those living close to the refuse dump, since the area is already a water-logged area it would breed mosquitoes. She opined that, the AMA is expected to help promote and teach sanitation to those who lack the knowledge but it seems they do not understand their work. She pleaded to government to come to their aid because the air pollution alone is destroying them and if drastic measures are not taken the worse would be happen. A pastor, whose church is close to the refuse dump complained that the refuse dump was affecting the church seriously and that there was no need to accuse anyone but the only need was to take steps in solving the problem at hand and pleaded to those in charge to work on this issue as soon as possible.
