Mr Prince Bagnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity, a Non-Governmental Human Rights Organisation has called on government to step up entrepreneurial skills training of students in Technical Universities and Vocational schools.

This, he said was the best way to reduce and subdue the growing graduate unemployment among the youth in the country.

“It is a pity that we have agricultural students who do not even have demonstration farms, and I wonder how such students will get interested in practical farming when they complete school.”

Mr Mba who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the skills training in Ghana said it was unfortunate that tertiary institutions were still generating more Grammar-oriented courses than skills training.

“Training more people in entrepreneurial and technical skills means creating more jobs for them and their trainees and that is the way we should be doing things now and leave the Grammar that limit our expertise.”

He urged the Training Institutions to come out with well-equipped workshops that would enable them to take contracts for students to perform and also sharpen their skills to be independent after completing their courses.

He said: ”Technical Universities for example can put up good workshops that can train students to take up building and Motor maintenance contracts from companies and individuals so that by the time they complete their courses, they could become experts in their fields.

“These students can also become employers on account of the immense skills they have acquired over the years, Mr Mba added.

He said days that graduates heavily depended on White-Collar Jobs were over ‘and the revolution we need to reduce unemployment is skills training from our Senior High Schools to the tertiary institutions.’

He advised Technical Universities to also train students in professional driving so as to make money and create more jobs.
