Nations Must Be Each Others Keeper Prez Mills

The President, J.E.A Mills now in Copenhagen, Denmark, has said that, this is not the time for us to be protecting our individual nations. Rather, we must be prepared to be each others keeper. In his maiden address at the Climate Change Conference in Denmark, President Mills stated that, this was not time to debate whether climate change was impacting adversely on our nation, but rather the time to take decisions which will affect the survival of our planet. He added that, it was time to ensure that generations now living and generations unborn, live a life which is better than what they came to meet. However, he said most countries affected by climate change were the poor and vulnerable ones who were already on the brink of poverty. He added that it was the time for bold and imaginative steps to be taken to ensure safety. We should not leave this conference as winners or losers; we should leave this conference with our heads high, knowing fully well that we have answered the questions and demands of our people, he told the conference. We know those who are contributing to the current problems and, in asking them to cut back, we are not discriminating, we are facing the realities of the situation. He charged the world leaders that, there was no way of going back home without demonstrating commitment to the survival of our planet. We must reach a decision which is supportable, defensible and will be long-lasting, he said. Addressing the United Nations Conference on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, yesterday, President Mills assured the world that Ghana was indeed committed to any measures that will be taken by the conference to ensure the survival of our planet. The summit is being attended by world leaders, including President Barack Obama of the US. The UN Conference, which includes the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Fifth Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP5) to the Kyoto Protocol was opened in the Danish Capital on December 7, 2009. It is expected to close on Friday, December 18, 2009.
