About twenty casual workers of the Cape Coast and Elmina castles have called on the Museums and Monuments Board and the Government to pay them their outstanding six-months salary arrears.

The workers who spoke to the Ghana News Agency on condition of anonymity said although their wages were very low, payments were always delayed.

They said several appeals were made to management to pay them, had fallen on deaf-ears, as they kept postponing payment dates thereby creating unbearable economic hardships for them as they could no longer pay their bills or satisfy their basic needs.

"I can't feed my family and buy the educational needs of my children any longer, I trek a distance of about one-and-half kilometres to work three times in a week. This is not fair so they should pay us to live decent lives," a worker said.

Mr Nicholas Ayivor, the Director in-charge of the two facilities confirmed complaints of the workers and assured that efforts were being made to pay them all monies due them.

He attributed the delays to lack of funds saying he was in touch with head office in Accra for the payments and therefore called for calm among workers.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Water Company (GWCL), has disconnected water to the Cape Coast Castle due to non-payment of bills running into 8,000 Cedis.

The situation has forced them to resort to fetching water from the the GWCL water reservoir at the facility, a source hinted.

When the GNA visited the facility, the washrooms at the 10:30 hours, they were dirty, smelly and totally unkempt.
