Fisherman in Police custody for human trafficking

A 45-year-old fisherman from Winneba based in Yeji, Kofi Sammy, has been remanded by the Winneba magistrate's court for human trafficking and child labour. His plea was not taken and he will reappear on December 31. Chief Inspector Moses Naa-Koglo Agbene said in 2007, the accused and his wife approached the mother of Joseph Kojo, 11, and Kofi Aidoo, 9, both of Winneba and school children. The accused paid 80 Ghana Cedis out of 100 Ghana Cedis agreed upon and with the help of his wife, Abba Simpa, the two children were transported to Yeji for fishing. Chief Inspector Agbene told the court that Challenging Heights, a non-governmental organisation based in Winneba got wind of the deal and pursued the matter. The prosecutor said the accused brought the two children back, dumped them in their mother's house this year in a very sick and unhealthy condition, gave them one Ghana cedis each and bolted back to Yeji. On December 16, 2009, the accused was spotted in Winneba by the NGO who hinted the police and he was arrested.
