Emmanuel Ayikwei, a mason who inflicted cutlass wounds on his wife, Rachael Adusu’s left wrist has been sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court on both charges of threat of death and causing harm.
Ayikwei was said to have carried out the act after Rachael questioned him over her missing GH¢1,000.00.
Ayikwei on the charge of causing harm was sentenced to pay a fine of GH¢2,400.00 in default 12 months imprisonment.
On the charge of threat of harm, Ayikwei was sentenced pay a fine of GH¢600.00 or in default serve a three-month jail term. Sentences will however run concurrently.
It further ordered Ayikwei to compensate Ms Adusu with GH¢500.00 and sign a bond to be of good behaviour; and to sustain peace between them for a period of 24 months in default go to jail for six months.
In addition the Court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku ordered Ayikwei to refund the medical bills of his wife in the sum of GH¢270.00.
The trial judge indicated that she was going to incarcerate Ayikwei, but declined and gave him an option of a fine because of the relationship that exist between him and the complainant and the fact that they have three kids.
Last week, Ayikwei appeared before the court and pleaded guilty to the offences levelled against him.
The court convicted Ayikwei and remanded him into Police custody for sentencing today because the medical report form indicated that the complaint had tenderness and lacerations of about four centimetres on her hand.
Ayikwei in his plea for mitigation prayed the court to have mercy on him adding that he has kids with the complainant.
According to him, he carried out the act as a result of a misunderstanding between them.
Chief inspector Kofi Atimbire who held a brief for DSP Adolphine Dzansi said the complaint was a trader and that Ayikwei and Rachael reside in the same house at Glefe and have been in a relationship for the past ten years and have three children.
