Lawyer Mary Ohenewaa Afful Embarks On Field Advocacy Project in Schools, Churches,Markets and Lorry Stations

Human Rights Lawyer and Feminist Activist, Mary Ohenewaa Afful, has embarked on a Field Advocacy Project in Schools, Churches, Communities, Markets and Lorry Stations to educate the public on specific areas of the law.

This is to help them know their legal rights and responsibilities on issues pertaining to Property Issues in Marriages and Divorce; The Laws on Domestic and Sexual Violence including Assault, Rape, Defilement, Sodomy and Sexual harassment; Inheritance and the need to make a VALID Will to avoid the non-compliance with the Intestate Succession Law, 1985, PNDCL 111 as Amended.

The Project is designed to create awareness, educate the entire public about the current legal position on these issues. It is also intended to engage everyone to know the law concerning the negative practices meted out to victims of abuse, the need to protect themselves and to desist from such practices so as not to be caught by the law.

As part of her Advocacy Programme, Lawyer Mary Ohenewaa distributes books written by herself and titled “THE LAWS ON DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE” and “THE CURRENT LEGAL POSITION ON MARRIAGES AND DIVORCE IN RELATION TO PROPERTY SETTLEMENT”.

The Advocacy Programme together with it free distribution of her Domestic and Sexual Violence books to school children at all levels is to help these children report cases of abuse, help victim seek Justice, and to prevent future offenders from committing such offences by knowing the jail terms associated with these types of crimes as outlined in the book. The rate of defilement cases is just on the increase and as a nation we need to prevent our young girls from being defiled by men and boys so the need for me to embark on this direct and physical education to schools at all levels.

It is expected that with this Advocacy Programme, we will be able to cover more Schools across the country together with the free books distribution once more support and sponsorship is received from corporate institutions and organizations as direct support is needed for the printing of the Domestic and Sexual Violence books for the free distribution to Schools across the country.

She has visited St. Peters Anglican Basic Schools at Ofankor, George Manieson Memorial School at Mayera, Kwabenya Atomic Basic School, Royal Diadem School in Dome, Nagab Montessori School etc.
