Suspected Robber Commits Suicide In Police Cells

A suspected armed robber who is alleged to have robbed, shot, assaulted and raped his victims at Kudzekope, a suburb of Sogakofe in the Volta Region, is reported to have committed suicide in police cells.

Twenty-seven-year-old William Tovor, who was standing trial at the Sogakofe circuit court in the South Tongu District of the region, was in police custody to assist the police in investigations.

However, at dawn last Wednesday – hours before he was due to reappear in court – William allegedly committed suicide, DAILY GUIDE has gathered.

DAILY GUIDE sources at the Sogokofe police station narrated that Tovor was believed to be from Nugblevi, Akatsi.

At the time of the incident the South Tongu Divisional Commander, Chief Supt. Dennis Fiakpui, narrated to the media that on Wednesday April 11, 2018 at about 10:30 pm, the suspect went on a robbery spree and attacked his victims – Esther Mawusi Afaglo, a nurse; Miss Adabla, an immigration officer and Emma Tengey, a trader – all residents of Kudzekope, a suburb of Sogakope.

He said the suspect, armed with locally manufactured pistol, allegedly used cement block to break the doors of two of his victims to gain access into their rooms. He then shot the right arm of the nurse and robbed her of her mobile phone; then proceeded to shoot through the door of the immigration officer, hitting her abdomen.

When the cases were reported, the police quickly moved to the village to launch a manhunt for the suspect. He was arrested with the assistance of the community.

Some items found on him included a mobile phone, pistol and AAA cartridges, 7 live and 3 used empty cartridges.
