700 NDC Supporters Threaten Defection Over ‘Crude’ Disqualification Clause

At least 700 supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Okaikoi North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region have threatened to leave the party after an aspiring Constituency Chairman, Gregory Quarshie was disqualified for being a “non-active” member.

Chairman of the Vetting Committee who doubles as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Ade Coker, reportedly told Mr Quarshie Tuesday, he has been disqualified because he is not an active member of the NDC.

He reportedly said an active member of the NDC is anybody other than the nine members occupying branch positions.

But peeved by the decision, the over 700 supporters say they will defect from the NDC if the Regional Chairman went ahead with his plan.

“From the very first day, Team Greg has been hated by both the constituency executives and regional executives led by Mr Ade Coker,” Spokesperson of the group, Rexford Amegbor told Myjoyonline.com in an interview.

Contradicting the position of the NDC Regional Chairman, Mr Amegbor said Mr Quarshie has been an active member of the NDC who is well-known throughout the constituency for his stellar unity works.

“He is a registered and card-bearing member of the party since 2007 and was the personal assistant to the former Constituency Chairman in 2017,” Mr Amegbor said of Mr Quarshie, a financial analyst and energy economist.

“He was also the director of elections for Abdul Abass Nasiru in the 2012 Parliamentary elections, strategist for the Abdul Razak Issa in the 2016 Parliamentary elections and a patron of Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry [branch],” he continued, asking, “How can you disqualify such a person?”

Attesting to Mr Quarshie’s work in the constituency, Chairman of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry branch, Enoch Komla Dogah said the financial analyst has been an active member in the constituency.

“He has been our patron and a keen contributing member of the party,” he said, issuing a three-day ultimatum to the Regional Executives to reinstate Mr Quarshie.

But to Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry B Branch Chairman, Kadmos Amuzu Kiddils, the Regional Chairman and the incumbent constituency chairman, Fiifi Taylor are just envious of the energy of the economist, and are poised to get rid of him at all cost.

“Mr Quarshie’s nomination form was proposed and endorsed by key members of the NDC, including the Okaikoi North Constituency 2016 Parliamentary Candidate Razak Issah, and seconded by the 2012 Parliamentary Candidate, Nasiru Abass, Godwin Ako Gunn and Andrew Okaikoi,” he said.
