Owing to rumours of increases in transport fares in the country, DAILY GUIDE checks around Tamale and the Northern Region at large have revealed that no transport fares have been increased.
Media reports have suggested that a statement signed by David Agboado and Yaw Barimah – PROs of the Concerned Drivers Association and True Drivers Union – has stated that they have increased transportation fares by 10 per cent with immediate effect.
According to the groups, the decision to increase fares was reached by the leadership of the unions due to the increase in fuel prices in recent times.
The executives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union in the region have therefore called on the general public to disregard the claims, describing them as false and malicious.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the assistant secretary of the union, Mohammed Buhari, said the attention of the union in the region has been drawn to rumours making rounds that the union has increased transport fares.
According to him, the said announcement and publication are false and should be treated as such.
He further explained that increases in fares may be as a result of a lot of factors such as price of spare parts, insurance and the ultimate contributor, fuel price.
Some of the drivers at the Tamale lorry station who spoke to DAILY GUIDE expressed disappointment in the Akufo-Addo-led government.
According to them, the government has failed to deliver on its promise made to them in the run off to the December 2016 elections.
“Since the President assumed office in 2017, fuel prices have rampantly seen some increase. This has affected businesses; however, transportation fares have not soared,” they disclosed.
