Hotel caretaker in court for assaulting his Director

John Asirifi Mensah, a hotel caretaker, who on being dismissed from his employment assaulted the hotel director over severance pay, was on Wednesday arraigned before the Kade District Magistrate Court. Mensah pleaded guilty with explanation but following the explanation that it was the director who first attacked him, the Magistrate, Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, entered a plea of not guilty for him. He was then granted bail in the sum of GHC 800 with a surety to re-appear on January 12 next year. Police Inspector Francis Asare-Cobbina, prosecuting, told the court that on November 08, Agyemang Duah, the Director of Asaah Hotel, terminated the appointment of Mensah, as a caretaker, due to some malpractices he had noticed. He said consequently, Duah promised to pay the accused two months salary of GHC 160 on November 14. The prosecutor said on that day Mensah and four others went to the hotel to demand the money as promised but the director told him that he had detected that the accused had given one of the rooms to a certain man who owed GHC 392 and was still occupying the room. The director told Mensah that he had to wait for the man to settle his bill before he could pay him. On hearing that, the prosecutor said Mensah became offended, rushed on the director and assaulted him. The director was badly injured and following a report to the police was issued with a medical form to attend hospital for treatment. Mensah was later arrested.
