Asante-Mampong recorded 87 accidents

A total of 87 road accidents were recorded in Asante-Mampong Municipality between January and November this year, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Benjamin Gyasi, Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU) has said. He said 13 lives were lost through the accidents for the period. During the same period, last year, the Municipality recorded 73 road accidents with 17 deaths. DSP Gyasi was speaking at a meeting with transport unions in the Municipality to discuss ways of ensuring strict enforcement of road traffic regulations in the area. Representatives of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Cooperative Transport Society and the Progressive Road Transport Association (PROTOA) attended the meeting. DSP Gyasi said over-speeding, driver fatigue and over-loading are the major causes of road accidents. Chief Superintendent Edward Oduro Kwateng, the Divisional Police Commander, advised drivers to respect traffic regulations and ensure that all safety devices of their vehicles functioned well before they put them on the road. Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeaman, Municipal Chief Executive said vehicles in the municipality would be given stickers in 2010 for easy identification.
